For those of you who don’t know, Elizabeth (Betsy) Griscom Ross designed the first flag for the United States of America back in the mid 1770’s. Many have been quick to point out that unlike my 8 star, 11 stripe design, Betsy’s design used 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies (hence the “Practice” in the title of my design and my hashtag #shewasjustpracticing). Research finds it was Betsy who chose to make the stars 5-pointed so she must have had some experience in making 5-pointed stars – otherwise, without experience or modern-day tools, it would have been quite challenging. As a quilter, even-numbered stars are much more practical so this quilt uses Foundation Paper Pieced (FPP) 4-pointed Friendship Stars for its stars and their size pretty much dictates the size of the overall quilt. The design was never intended to be an exact replica, but instead celebrates Betsy Ross’ design in quilt.
